What keeps "Laughing" Larry Berger, laughing? Networking and connecting with others. During Berger’s talk with the Wild About Writing writers group, he claimed it was also the key to successfully selling tens of thousands of his books.
By casually talking about his writing at professional networking events, writers clubs, poetry readings, and book stores, Berger has been able to route his own book tour, speak at festivals, and have his book The Green Lantern a Guide for Achieving the American Dream, Volume 2, How to Survive in a Modern Economy( Even on a Poet's Income!) used as a college textbook.
Berger has worked with a literary agent and used self-publishing platforms like Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing and hybrid publishers like Book Locker, but was disappointed by their sales numbers and low royalties. So he decided to go at it alone. He used Printing Plus to print his books and asked local book stores, Lift Bridge, Books Ect., and online retailer, Book Shop, to sell them. Bookstore owners and group organizers like Rochester’s Just Poets club hosted reading events for Berger and asked him to speak at festivals. Those reading events branched into multiple speaking engagements, ultimately resulting in Berger creating his own book tour across the country.
His journey to selling tens of thousands of books took years and was not without financial losses and even health consequences. Despite this, Berger continues to laugh and uses his experiences to guide other authors through the process of having a successful selling book—at half the cost, a quarter of the time, and hopefully without a stay in the hospital. Cindy L. Blair, author of Whispers from my heart: Emerging from the depths with God, testified that: “Lawrence, is more than just a professional, he truly cares about your work.” about her experience with working with Berger on her book of poems.
